Flower Diaries - the Tropical Delights in Thailand
9th Feb 2022
Dearest Eden,
I have been craving a change of scenery, an inviting climate that will feel like an embrace during these strange and ever-changing times. I have departed the uncertainty of Europe (thankfully, all my COVID tests have been negative), and my travels now bring me to Thailand, where a new wealth of tropical flowers awaits me.
I particularly find myself drawn towards the blooms with rich, heavy scents. You can smell the jasmine here from miles away. Its name is derived from the Persian ‘Yasmin’, which translates to ‘gift from God’. The perfume is so heavenly that no one could possibly question its name, particularly at night when the air is still sultry and warm. The breeze feels like fragrant silk against the skin.
Hibiscus has also caught my eye, with its vibrant colour and prominent stamen. I always considered it a cheerful flower, but was surprised to learn that Thais often still associate it with ill meaning. In the Ayutthaya kingdom they used hibiscus to decorate the ear of a prisoner awaiting execution, just before they witnessed their final glimpse of light. This ritual can likely be traced back to the Indian practice of offering the hibiscus flower to Maha Kali, the goddess of death and time.
I hope you will stay safe now that Omicron is rampant. I like collecting masks in pretty patterns, and I would also suggest hand sanitisers with floral scents. I truly believe in elevating the ordinary to manage the disillusionment often caused by this seemingly never-ending pandemic.
Now is a time to appreciate the small miracles the world has to offer. I miss the sense of freedom that used to come with travel. But I feel lucky, my loved ones are healthy and happy, and when I pick these tropical blooms to keep me company I think of them and know that everything is a cycle, like the seasons. This all will pass, and the flowers will always continue to bloom.
All my love,
Anneliese
